writing in the primary school
Pre-writing and writing skills are taught from Reception. Children will have opportunities to mark make using a wide range of tools. All children are supported to engage in fine motor activities to prepare them for writing. For example, the use of therapy putties, threading activities, and posting tasks. We recognise a wide range of writing methods including the use of symbols instead of written words. Pupils have access to iPads, laptops and computers allowing our creative writers to share their thoughts without the additional barrier of using a traditional writing tool. We use strategies such as colourful semantics across the curriculum as this structured approach supports constructing sentences. We encourage pupils to write for a range of functional purposes for example; writing a shopping list, writing a greetings card for a friend, typing an information poster.
