Maple Group - 'Where we live' topic

Maple group have had a very busy half term exploring the local area as part of our ‘Where We Live’ topic.

We visited Woking Peacocks Shopping Centre on several occasions to learn how to navigate our way around independently using the store maps. The students have become very capable of finding specific shops and means to travel between floors.

We enjoyed a walk around RHS Wisley Gardens and used the signposts to locate the glasshouse. We then enjoyed a picnic lunch by the lake on a sunny winter day. Last week we visited St John’s Lye for a walk in the woods and to view the trains from the train bridge.

We have used our knowledge from these outings in our literacy sessions, to create a 'Woking guide book' of the local area, drawing maps of the places we have been and thinking about what we would recommend to other visitors.

On Tuesday 21st January, we had a special craft day with Bag Books. During the day the students had the opportunity to try sawing, hammering, painting, sanding and, sewing on a manual machine to create physical props for a story called “Farmer Mike”. At the end of a great day we shared the story together taking turns to use props we had made to accompany it.

In Dance and Music we have been learning about rhythm. We have taken turns to create new lyrics for the ‘Where We Live’ song. Our new verses focus on who we live with and the places we come from. We have enjoyed sharing these with the other groups during assembly.

In Food Technology, the students have become very proficient at following recipes, measuring out and mixing ingredients. We have made some fantastic cakes which everyone has enjoyed. It has been wonderful to see how many of the students have re made the cakes at home. We are delighted that you are enjoying using your skills.

Our Numeracy focus has been Time. We have been learning to read clocks and think about our daily schedules. We hope you enjoy viewing the pictures of our learning.
