The Heart of Freemantles is one of three Outdoor learning spaces located between the Primary and Secondary schools.
Our onsite Horticulture and Animal care area offers students opportunities to gain a wide range of transferable skills of which can be applied in both personal lives and future careers within a nurturing and supportive environment.
Through our carousal approach to learning, The Heart area not only teaches practical Horticulture and Animal Care, but helps develop cognitive skills such as problem solving, critical thinking, communication and creative thinking. The Heart also provides space for students to develop social skills and teamwork.
Within our Horticulture area students grow produce for their snack and Food Tech sessions, Forest School cooking and for our Enterprise scheme. This provides our students with an opportunity to learn about ‘farm to fork’ which can help connect our students with what they grow and eat.
Our Animal area provides our students with opportunities for a hands-on approach to Animal Care on a daily basis, this allows them to understand the care needed when looking after animals. This helps promote responsibility as well as social skills such as empathy, patience and cooperation.
Like our other Outdoor Learning areas, we have adopted Colour Zones into The Heart area. These zones provide our students with visual cues and help our students navigate independently around the area.
